At a press conference Monday afternoon, Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said 46-year-old Bradley Rives pointed a loaded flare pistol at police. An officer shot Rives with a taser gun, but it wasn't effective. That's when Officer Jimmy Snead shot Rives several times in the chest and lower body.
Rives was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he later died.
The incident started last Friday behind the Good Shepherd Ministries on Martin Street. The organization's director says Rives had cancer and was trying to commit suicide. They initially called the police to intervene.
Snead is now on administrative leave. Chief Evangelous isn't sure when he'll return to work.
