Executive Director for Local Red Cross Fired

MARCH 4, 2004 -- The leader of one of the region's most important charities has been fired.

The Red Cross deals with everything from disaster relief and blood drives to helping fire victims. The local chapter of the Red Cross is now looking for a new executive director.

Stephen Barnett was the Executive Director of the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross.  The chairman of the Red Cross Board of Directors says Barnett was fired for "performance issues." He held the title for five years.

Barnett was escorted out of the Red Cross building on South 17th Street, but remains on the payroll. A new interim director will take charge on Monday.
