Consider This: Toy Guns v. Real Guns

JANUARY 31, 2006 -- You might think of BB and pellet guns as toys. They're not. First, like any weapon, they can be dangerous if used improperly. Second, they can be deadly in another way. There have been many instances, over the years, when children have pointed these toys at law enforcement officers. It's instinctive for police officers to take the necessary steps to ensure their safety when confronted by anyone with a gun. All too often, those officers shoot what they perceive as a gunman and the result is tragic: a dead child. Such an incident happened in Longwood, Florida just a few weeks ago.

Many organizations, law enforcement agencies, and even firearms manufacturers favor making BB, pellet, and other toy guns look like anything but a real firearm. Bright orange colors have been suggested. Right now, anyone can buy toy guns. We join those who want a distinct difference in the appearance of toy guns and real firearms.

That's what we think. Tell us what you think.
