JANUARY 27, 2006 -- Wrightsville Beach leaders say they want to crack down on surfers who ignore the town's surf zones.
Thursday night, the Board of Aldermen voted to reinstate two surf zones that will rotate along the beachfront. The ordinance restricting surfers to those zones expired last year, but the aldermen are bringing it back for this surfing season. Surfers also have to use leashes on their boards.
Supporters say the measures keep both surfers and swimmers safe.
This year, the aldermen are emphasizing enforcement. They say violators will risk fines as high as $100.
