Sewage Spill Contained in Carolina Beach

JANUARY 23, 2006 -- The town of Carolina Beach says it has kept hundreds of gallons of leaking sewage from flowing into Carolina Beach Lake.

Town officials say grease clogs, wood chips and sediment are to blame for a sewer blockage that caused a sewer main to overflow. Nearly 1,800 gallons of sewage was discovered flowing out of a manhole near the lake around 8:00 Monday morning. The town says it stopped the leak about three hours later.

A small amount of sewage did make its way into the lake, but crews barricaded ditches and prevented it from going any further. The town is checking out other sewer mains in the area.
