Detectives Investigate First Murder of the Year in Columbus Co.

JANUARY 16, 2006 -- Columbus County sheriff's deputies are investigating the first murder of 2006.

Mickey Ray Hayes was found in his home on Peanut Worley Road south of Cerro Gordo Saturday night, killed by an apparent gun shot wound to the head. The weapon is believed to be a shotgun.

Police were called to the scene by a neighbor who had been working on the victim's truck.

Hayes was retired from the U.S. Navy and had lived alone in the mobile home for the past two years.

The sheriff's department has not made any arrests. Anyone with information should call the Columbus County Sheriff's Department at 642-6551.
