Long Beach Pier to be Demolished

DECEMBER 29, 2005 -- A piece of North Carolina history is being demolished in the new year. The Long Beach Pier will be torn down in February.

The pier has a fitting name. At 1,056 feet long, it was once the longest pier on the east coast, and still holds the title in North Carolina. The pier was built fifty years ago.

Owner Tommy Thomes sold the property to a Raleigh investor who will build upscale beach property on the land. Managers at the pier say Thomes had to sell the property to fulfill a divorce settlement. The pier sits on nine lots that are being sold for $1.1 million each.

Some people say they understand Thomes' position, but wish there had been a way to save the landmark.

A final celebration of the pier will take place on New Year's Eve.  The sale is final January 6.
