Consider This: Donations as Gifts

DECEMBER 14, 2005 -- For many people, the past year has been wonderful. Some found the love of their lives. Some welcomed new babies. Some were promoted, offered new jobs or opened their own business. Others bought new homes or were blessed with similar positive events in their lives.

Yet it has been a very cruel year for countless people. Hurricanes have destroyed lives in multiple states. A tsunami wiped entire villages off the coast of several countries. Closer to home, you may have a friend who lost their job, was struck by disease, or suffered the financial toll of a divorce.

If you are one of the fortunate ones, perhaps this year you will suggest your family and friends give you a different kind of holiday gift. If they ask, consider letting your loved ones know you'd be honored if they made a donation to a favorite charity or bought a gift for a less privileged family. If ever there was an abundance of deserving people who could benefit from the generosity of those of us who don't need more, it's now.

That's what we think, tell us what you think.
