New Traffic Light Installed to Prevent Accidents

NOVEMBER 16, 2005 -- Two deadly car accidents at one Wilmington intersection have spurred an experimental light to go up with a new flashing yellow signal.

The light is now up at the 800 block of College Road near the K-Mart. It has four vertical lights, including a flashing yellow turn arrow. The arrow should signal to drivers they need to stop and look before making a turn in front of oncoming traffic.

Several accidents have occurred as a result of drivers confusing solid green lights with green arrows.

Officials say the new light will communicate that a flashing yellow arrow means to yield if you're planning to turn left.
