Chicken Truck Crashes in Pender County

NOVEMBER 9, 2005 -- A truck crash on Highway 11 in Pender County caused quite a bit of chaos as a trailer carrying 5,000 chickens turned over.

It all happened around 8:30 Wednesday morning.

Highway patrol troopers tell WECT News that the driver of the chicken trailer was speeding and ran into a ditch. About half the chickens he was carrying died.

The driver was sent to Pender County Memorial Hospital and suffered cuts, bruises and antifreeze burns to his back. He was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon. The surviving chickens were transported to Nash Johnson and Sons in Rose Hill.
