Powerball Lures Gamblers South of the Border

OCTOBER 20, 2005 -- Lottery sales have reached record levels in South Carolina in advance of Wednesday night's Powerball drawing, and much of that business came from people in North Carolina.

The winning numbers are 7, 21, 43, 44, 49 and the Powerball is 29.

Officials say one winning ticket was sold in Oregon. South Carolina lottery officials say at one point a record $20,000 in tickets were being sold in the state every minute. Officials say sales for the record drawing topped $12 million, with lottery players spending more than $7 million Wednesday.

The $340 million jackpot is the second largest in U.S. history.

North Carolina gets its own lottery in a few months, but for now gamblers have to make the trip south of the border.
