OCTOBER 16, 2005 -- A portion of a 24-inch waste water pipe main line has broken near the intersection of River Road and Bryan Road in Wilmington. The spill was detected by city staff at aroun 7 a.m. Sunday morning. As of 1 p.m., it is estimated that 15,000 gallons of wastewater has left the system and made its way into the Cape Fear River via a storm drain.
City crews have begun excavating the site and will repair the line when they get full access to it this afternoon. The cause of the break is not yet known.
City officials say there is no threat to drinking water and waste water services have not been interrupted. However, as a precaution, the city recommends that citizens not come into contact with the water.
