SEPTEMBER 27, 2005 -- The fire chief in Whiteville has abruptly resigned after being accused of wrongdoing on the job. Bill Poe says he is quitting for personal and professional reasons.
State insurance officials want to ask Poe questions at a hearing in October. They want to know whether he conducted fire inspections without the proper qualifications.
They also want to know if the hospital and other facilities were properly inspected.
Officials say Poe does accept full responsibility for his actions.
