PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Flooding from Hurricane Matthew took many homes from residents in Pender County near the Black River.
Almost two years later, Kristen Johnson moved back into a home that was gutted, rebuilt and lifted to survive another hurricane.
With the possibility of Hurricane Florence hitting our area next week, Johnson isn't taking any chances.
"We've made sure we have all of our homeowners insurance paid up," Johnson said. "We have the right type of insurance. We have a pantry in the back that is stocked up with water. We have enough food and water to last us for a week.
"We're not playing around this time. We're really being prepared for what could or may not happen."
Repairs to her home would have been more than $100,000 but fortunately, nonprofit organizations and auctions helped her raise the money to rebuild, leaving Johnson to pay only with hugs or gratitude.
