WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - New flashing lights now warn drivers to slow when passing Bellamy Elementary School down during school hours.
They were installed the last week before students came back.
"This has been a year long process that was headed up by our parents to bring awareness to folks speeding down Sanders Road and to give law enforcement the ability to ticket unsafe driving," said Principal Burt Kilpatrick.
The speed limit on Sanders Road is 45 mph. For years there were simply two signs that read 'slow down during school hours.'
Now there are lights that flash from approx 7:15 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 2:50 p.m.
There is one sign warning drivers to slow to 35 mph. A second sign has been requested.
