WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - With children heading back to school, you'll want to pay attention to the other "child" in your life: your pet.

Holly Wright, the general manager of Pet Supplies Plus, said pet owners will want to watch for signs of boredom in their pet. Boredom can lead to bad behavior.

Here are her tips:

  1. Identify A Bored Pet – Not all pets have boredom symptoms, but most often pets will either be getting into trouble or have a sudden decrease in energy and lying around rather than playing.
  2. Purchase the Right Products – The best toys to purchase include rubber balls, long-lasting bones, noisemakers, etc. to keep them entertained for longer time periods and tire them out for a nap.
  3. Gadgets are Good, Too – In a day of technology, pet parents can purchase cameras or pet feeders that integrate with an app allowing them to watch, talk, and feeds their pet throughout the day.
  4. Keeping Your Pet Safe – Room temperatures, safe toys, food and water supply are all important to discuss when leaving a pet home alone for long hours.
