CERRO GORDO, NC (WECT) - The West Columbus High School football team is getting creative with how it's raising money for items of need.

The program is using donorschoose.org, a website that allows giving to organizations.

"We are in this rural area, and sometimes funds are hard to come by," said coach James Pierce. "We do fundraisers quite a bit, and other sports and athletic programs do fundraisers. We were just looking to do some off-the-wall stuff and reaching out to people that we don't even know but may want to reach out to a program and help a program in need."

To get funding, programs must list the items they want like footballs, hand warmers and towels.

When the project is fully funded, those items are shipped to the school.

"I think that's something that people want to know," West Columbus Athletic Director James Jones said. "They want to know where their money is going and what it's going to be used for. That platform gives you the ability to show what you are using it for and what you are getting with the money they are donating."

After having a project funded for his ROTC classroom, West Columbus teacher Michael Noack brought the website to the attention to the school's athletic department and it's already been a success.

"For coach Jones' project we got funded, it was a guy out of California that did it," Noack said. "It was an anonymous donation, so it has a lot of reach."
