WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - With only one winning season in program history, Ashley High School hasn't experienced a lot of success on the football field.
That could be changing after a 31-14 victory over Southern Wayne last Friday. The season-opening win has put a bit more pep in the team's step at practice.
"I feel like Ashley has a bad reputation," said junior Makai Stanley, "but we have a bunch of good players."
It's a commitment to each other that has the players believing this could be the year the Screaming Eagles make the state playoffs.
"We have high expectations for ourselves," said senior Cade Jones. "It's us against the world right now, and we are just ready to shock everybody."
"We represent everybody because everybody at one time in their life was an underdog," said coach Jeff Turner. "We are not perfect, or the most talented, but the kids do what we ask of them, and they work hard."
Ashley seeks a 2-0 start when travels to Purnell Swett on Friday.
