30 students get head start on back to school shopping

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Most children want to look sharp when they head back to school and 30 kids in Wilmington got some help in that department on Thursday.

Academy Sports gave 30 young students from the Wilmington Police Activities League a back to school shopping spree. Each child received a $100 Academy gift card to use for athletic apparel, backpacks, footwear and other school necessities.

"They can get all their back to school needs here one-stop shop," said Corey Turner, Academy Sports store director. "It's a really exciting time for the kids."

This is the ninth year for the back to school program, which helps more than 3,000 kids throughout the Southeast and Midwest.

The Police Activities League (PAL) is an athletic-based program designed to connect police officers with youth in their community by engaging boys and girls in positive activities that improve their quality of life, present developmental opportunities, and offer the prospect of a brighter future.
