WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A family recipe that dates back to the late 1800s turned one family business into the most popular piemakers in the state.
Slice Pie Company operates out of Raleigh but ships nationwide. The company's creations are also available at Blue Moon Gift Shop in Wilmington.
Mike Mullins, who founded the company with his daughter, joined Ashlea Kosikowski on WECT First at Four alongside his granddaughter to talk about some of the secrets to baking the perfect pie.
But Mullins wouldn't share the secret recipe, as that would take a bite out of profits.
He said the pie crust is made without lard, butter or margarine.
We're still wondering how that works.
Mullins said the family originally considered naming the company the "Oh My God, Pie Company" because that's what everyone says when they taste the baked deliciousness.
The family's Apple Pie won First Place at the North Carolina State Fair.
