Pender Co. deputies arrest man who escaped from police custody

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Pender County officer failed to follow proper confinement procedures, which led to a man escaping from police custody early Thursday morning.

According to Chief Ron Shanahan with the Surf City Police Department, Christopher Scott Tew-Creech of Jacksonville was found and taken into custody in the 4000 block of Stag Park Road around 1:15 p.m. Thursday.

Tew-Creech had been arrested on active drug warrants from the Onslow County Sheriff's Office and allegedly had heroin in his possession at the time of arrest.

Shanahan said Tew-Creech was taken to the Pender County magistrate's office where he was placed on a secured bond.

According to a news release from Shanahan on Friday, the officer left Tew-Creech handcuffed, but unattended in the lobby when he realized the suspect fled.

"It was later found that a release order was never issued to the officer during this process," Shanahan said in the email. "This is a serious matter, which will be handled internally, so as to prevent an incident like this from happening again."

The Wilmington and Burgaw police departments assisted in the search.
