Parents urged to be aware of children's screen time to protect their eyes

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Children between the ages of 8 and 12 spend an average of six hours on their phones or computers each day, according to Common Sense Media.

Dr. Rasika Whitesell from MyEyeDr. advises as the start of the school year approaches, parents should take note of how much time their child spends in front of digital devices.

Given that children have more digital tools at their disposal than ever before, parents should be sure to manage screen time.

Parents should schedule breaks for their children and make sure they have a good working space at home to do their schoolwork.

She also recommends a comprehensive eye exam before children head back to school.

Clear, comfortable vision makes it easier to read books and what the teacher writes on the blackboard, so Whitesell explains it also helps children process and remember what's being taught.
