WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A proposed Dollar General would become the 11th location in the Wilmington area, but neighbors are concerned the new store would add to an already heavy traffic burden.
The Dollar General will be located at 810 Pine Grove Dr. in Wilmington between the intersections with Brightwood Road and Greenville Loop Road.
If the plan moves forward — it is still under review by the Technical Review Committee — construction would start October 25, and the store would open by late March 2019, according to a staff member at Par 5 Development, LLC.
A Facebook post about the proposed Dollar General has generated comments about slow traffic being worsened with this new development. A city spokesperson said the project engineer is working with city and traffic engineering to determine the most effective ways to mitigate the traffic.
There are nine open Dollar General stores in the Wilmington area as of today, according to a Google Maps search checked using the store locator on the Dollar General Website.
A 10th Dollar General is under construction on 3606 Carolina Beach Road, and is slated to open in fall 2018. The proposed Pine Grove Drive location would become No. 11.
Just this week, Dollar General opened its 15,000th store nationwide in Wilmington on 406 Dawson St.
A Dollar General spokesperson said the company has not yet committed to building a store on Pine Grove Drive.
"At this time, we are currently in due diligence phase for a new Dollar General in Wilmington, North Carolina that would be located off Pine Grove Drive," a spokesperson for Dollar General wrote in an email.
"This means we are reviewing the opportunity to add a new store in the area, but we have not committed to doing so just yet. Based on our current timeline, we anticipate to have a final decision on this by fall 2018," the spokesperson wrote.
The City of Wilmington Technical Review Committee has reviewed the Dollar General store plans.
A city planner recommended moving the proposed pedestrian connection from the building to the sidewalk to a safer location, according to comments submitted on July 13.
The new Dollar General store would employ approximately 6-10 employees, depending on the individual needs of the store, said a spokesperson.
