Billboard advertisements are designed to grab the attention of people passing by in their cars.
A billboard in Wilmington might have done its job a little too well.
Concerned drivers dialed 911 after spotting a mannequin hanging from a billboard advertising Above All Roofing on Carolina Beach Road.
We obtained two phone calls to New Hanover County dispatchers about the billboard.
In one call, a woman told a dispatcher, "It doesn't look like suicide, it looks like stupid."
In another call, the dispatcher asked if it could be a mannequin.
"Not to be funny ma’am, but you don’t think it’s one of those like mannequins they put on those billboards do you?” the dispatcher asked.
“No, no, no, no. It was a person," the caller insisted. "I could tell he was kind of swinging, but he wasn’t like kicking his legs seriously like he was in serious trouble. So I don’t know if he was just hanging there to stretch or if he can reach his ladder.”
Yes, yes, yes, yes. It was a mannequin.
