A Brunswick County man will spend the rest of his life in prison after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting and impregnating a young girl.
According to the District Attorney's Office, John Edward Ward, 50, of Supply, entered a guilty plea on Monday to one count each of first-degree rape, statutory rape of a child by an adult, first-degree sexual offense, and sexual offense with a child, among other charges.
Ward was arrested in May of 2017 in connection with a series of sexual assaults against the victim who was 9 years old at the time of his arrest. Authorities said the offenses took place between 2015 and 2016.
Prosecutors said the victim was impregnated by Ward during one of the sexual assaults. After the infant was born, DNA evidence identified Ward as the baby's father.
At Monday's sentencing hearing, prosecutors asked for two consecutive life sentences for Ward. Judge J. Stanley Carmical noted the victim was already serving her own life sentence and honored the prosecutors' request.
