This week our news team got a rare opportunity to observe some folks working in one of the most important jobs in our region – nursing.
In particular, our team spent many hours inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
What they discovered was a caring group of professionals who work under more stressful conditions than many of us will ever face at our workplaces.
One nurse explained the life and death decisions they have to make on a daily basis – with the realization that some days they are overseeing a child that may not make it home with their family.
Consider this: Nursing turnover is a real concern in this country. Some reports show first-year turnover rates at nearly 20 percent.
Our story does not include solutions to that issue. But it does open a window into understanding what our nurses face daily.
I hope it gives you a better appreciation for how important this profession is for our community.
