The purchase of part of Echo Farms in New Hanover County should stand as a great example of how citizens can lobby their government for solutions to a community issue.
The folks living near the closed down golf course feared the worst. The owner of the course was set to develop that land for new homes. It was their right to do so. But in an already crowded area - neighbors were concerned.
The pushback landed in court, and while they didn’t get everything they wanted, the neighbors did win the attention of local government.
This week, New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington are set to make a deal to purchase 14 acres of land inside Echo Farms to serve as a public park.
Now the entire community will benefit because of the work started by this concerned group of neighbors.
Consider This: New Hanover County is running out of undeveloped land. And yes, there will be tax implications from decisions like this to preserve greenspace.
But as our area grows at an accelerated rate, there is a need to make wise decisions – like this one – to ensure our community thrives in the years to come.
