NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Some small changes in your behavior could pay big dividends when it comes to protecting yourself and your belongings.
After a recent rash of armed robberies in the area, the Wilmington Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit shared tips on preemptive measures people can take to avoid being victims.
Thieves don't discriminate when it comes to where and when they rob people, evidenced by last weekend's armed robberies that occurred in broad daylight.
Advice from WPD's Crime Prevention Unit includes:
- Don't carry a lot of items when walking to or from your car
- Don't leave valuables out for everyone to see
- Remain vigilant at all times
- Report suspicious activity and try to get a good look at a possible suspect so you can give police an accurate description
Ed Pompey with the CPU added: "Try to not make yourself a target. Sit in the car if it's raining. Just be aware of your surroundings.
"Also, be able to get a description of someone. If you see someone who's out of place, get what they have on, maybe tattoos. Anything that can serve as a description of that person."
Police wouldn't walk WECT's Connor DelPrete through specific armed robbery scenarios, saying they didn't want to be held liable for information that may not work in a chaotic scenario.
