BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Two men are facing financial crimes charges following separate investigations by the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.
Bruce Alan Rains, 66, of Wilmington, is charged with seven counts each of obtaining property by false pretenses and forgery of an instrument.
Rains is accused of defrauding Hoffman Ecoworks, Inc. by altering multiple checks so that they were paid to him instead of the Internal Revenue Service. In total, Rains allegedly collected $7,000 between Jan. 2016 and June 11, 2018.
He was arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Brunswick County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond.
In a separate investigation, Henry Frederick Specht Jr., 60, of Little River, SC, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with obtaining property by false pretense.
Specht is accused of accepting checks totaling over $83,000 from an individual with the promise to prepare, file, and pay taxes to the NC Department of Revenue and the IRS. Detectives say he failed to do so.
Specht was given a $10,000 bond.
