Rough Seas Caused by Hurricane Keeps Officials Busy

SEPTEMBER 11, 2005 -- Dangerous rip currents and rough surf kept rescue crews busy at local beaches on Sunday.

Just after 2:00 pm, witnesses say two young boys on boogie boards went missing in the water near the Hula Grille.

Coast Guard officials searched for the boys by boat and by helicopter for several hours before terminating the search.

The local sheriff's office says two boys that fit the description came in off the beach. They believe these to be the two on the boogie boards.

Carolina Beach Police also searched for a possible missing swimmer in the area. That search was called off as well. No one was ever reported missing.

Carolina and Kure beaches are now closed to swimmers and surfers.

Wrightsville Beach is still open, but because of the dangerous rip currents, Coast Guard officials are urging people to stay out of the water.
