New Hanover beats Crest, Ledford blanks Whiteville in state championship matchups

BURLINGTON — New Hanover High School is one win away from taking the 3-A state baseball championship.

The Wildcats beat Shelby Crest 8-4 in Game 1 of the best-of-3 championship series on Friday in Burlington.

New Hanover jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a three-run home run in the top of the second inning.

The game was delayed by rain with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but when play resumed, New Hanover pitcher Mitch Baddour struck out the final two batters to end it.

Game 2 is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.

Ledford 10, Whiteville 0, 5 inn.

ZEBULON — Ledford High School beat the Whiteville Wolfpack 10-0 in Game 1 of the 2A baseball state championship series at Five County Stadium on Friday night.

Chris Villaman pitched a complete game for the Panthers (29-3), allowing two hits and striking out eight.

Whiteville (27-2) had its 26-game winning streak come to an end.

Game 2 in the best-of-3 series is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.
