Whiteville High School’s baseball team is in the 2A East finals for the fifth straight year.
The Wolfpack will open the best-of-3 series against North Lenoir at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Whiteville (25-1) hasn’t skipped a beat since star pitcher MacKenzie Gore graduated and was the third overall pick by the San Diego Padres in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft.
Coming into the season, Wolfpack head coach Brett Harwood still had high expectations for his team even without Gore.
"We should be better because they are older and have worked in the weight room,” said Harwood. “One to nine, we should be better. Do we have that one dominant player? Probably not, but as a whole team, I think our lineup is better and it should be that way."
Those expectations have rubbed off on the players, who are focused solely on winning.
“It’s all about the W,” said senior Brooks Baldwin. “It’s all about the W on our chest and on our hats.”
