Athenian Press events aim to empower women

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A variety of events will empower women and encourage discussion.

Athenian Press is an anti-racist, feminist, creative organization in Wilmington, which encourages writers to use their craft to express oneself, promote creativity, encourage collaboration, and find healing and power.

Here are a few upcoming events the group has in the works:

Discussion & Discovery

Wednesday, May 23, 2018

6:00 PM to 7:30 PM

Feeling overwhelmed with the world? Join us on Wednesdays for engaging discussion on topics affecting women and femmes, where you are free to express your feelings and hear out others (remember, we are a safe zone!) Our discussion themes will be released monthly and we are always open to suggestions.

We will begin with brief free write followed by truth-telling discussion.

May's theme: Body Positivity and Embracing the Body

Write On Series: Place/Setting

Saturday, May 26, 2018

11:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Are you interested in practicing your prose writing skills and the art of storytelling?

Have you been wanting to perfect your writing skills in a group of other aspiring writers?

In this 4-week series, each week will focus on a different element of prose and story. We will start with a brief discussion, then segue into a series of timed writing exercises that will last between five and fifteen minutes each, followed by a short revision period and fifteen to twenty minutes of sharing.

Participants will learn to think critically about each subject, generate new material, then practice sharing aloud (sharing is encouraged but not required). If you have a story or characters you are already working on and would like to expand, feel free to bring that along.

The only materials you will need are your laptop or something to write on and your imagination!

$15 per session

$45 for 4-week session/Athenian members receive 5% off
