WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington man was arrested and charged with insurance fraud after an incident involving a rental car.
According to a news release from the NC Department of Insurance, Chris Edwin McCoy, 53, was arrested on April 27 in New Hanover County and charged with one felony count of attempting to obtain property by false pretenses.
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office online inmate database lists McCoy as being additionally charged with failure to appear felony and misdemeanor charges, a failure to return a rental vehicle charge and a worthless check misdemeanor charge. His bond is listed at $31,000 and his next court date is May 24.
Special agents with the NC Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division said McCoy rented a car and failed to return it.
While the rental was in McCoy's possession, McCoy took the car to a repair shop for an oil change, but the repair shop didn't replace the drain plug properly which resulted in damage to the engine.
After the shop filed a claim on the vehicle for an engine replacement, Travelers Indemnity Company company sent a claim check for $6,315.06 to McCoy, who represented himself as the owner of the rental car and cashed the check, but never paid for the repairs.
