The Wakefield girls’ soccer team beat the Hoggard Vikings 2-0 in the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoffs Wednesday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead with 8:01 to play in the first half. The Vikings tried to clear the ball, but Rachel Crum came up with the ball and beat Hoggard goalie Phoebe Simpson.
“Just being down 1-0 at the half, I felt like we needed to be more aggressive” said Hoggard head coach Justin Schatz.
Wakefield’s Gina Freeman added to the lead with 33:48 to go in the second half. Freeman jarred the ball away from Simpson, who was trying to make a save.
“I feel like we gave up two soft goals, and when you are down, you have to play harder, and that is what I was trying to get them to do,” Schatz said.
Hoggard (19-1-4) will return seven starters next season, but will lose 11 seniors.
