Suicide awareness: register to take part in a free Question, Persuade, Refer training session at WECT May 21, 5-7 p.m. (Source: WECT)

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - All this month WECT is talking about a topic that is usually kept quiet: suicide.

But talking isn't enough. Instead, we're going one step further to offer viewers training on how to support and potentially save the life of someone contemplating suicide.

We're inviting a group of participants to join us in the WECT New studio May 21.

Thanks to an area psychologist, you and WECT's staff will receive free "QPR" training, which stands for Question, Persuade, Refer.

This two-hour program will help you identify those at risk, learn how to intervene and how to guide those in crisis toward local resources.

We're all the eyes and ears of our fellow community members.

The free training class has reached it's full capacity. However if you would like to still get your name on the list, we will contact you in the event of cancellations.

Please email newsroom@wect.com with your name, contact information and commitment to arrive at WECT no later than 4:30 p.m., May 21 for a two-hour training from 5-7 p.m.

Please note portions may be videotaped throughout the training for news purposes.
