WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Mixed martial arts aren't just for fighting anymore.
Wilmington native Derek Brunson hosted the grand opening of his new gym inside the Independence Mall Saturday. Brunson MMA & Fitness has jiu jitsu, cardo kickboxing, and other martial arts classes.
"Martial Arts are the best thing, and the best way to get into shape in my opinion," said Brunson. "It's one of those activities that you can come in and zone out and not thinking how boring it is, you are just having fun."
MMA fans in attendance were also able to get photos and autographs from UFC fighter Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, who make the trip to Wilmington to help Brunson.
For Cerrone, MMA is a lifetime sport.
"Not everyone in here wants to be a UFC fighter," said Cerrone. "But the women and the children, but it's the physical nature of the sport. Even the dads come in and enjoy the sports."
