WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Art is painting a way to recovery for addicts in the area.
According to art therapist Deb Shoemaker, creativity can be one of the keys to healing.
"In art therapy, through the creative process, it really just gives a whole other level of opportunities to do all of those things I just talked about, about developing new skills new confidence just a new way to look at life," Shoemaker said.
Painting a picture or sculpting a piece of pottery makes those in recovery feel like they're in control, Shoemaker said.
"Especially in the beginning of recovery, we want to give as much control over the medium and mastery over the medium as possible because that becomes part of the therapeutic. Part of the therapy is mastering and overcoming something that they can master like the art materials," Shoemaker said.
