Seven shutout innings from starter Bryan Conroy helped lift Elon to a 4-0 win and to a series victory over UNCW on Sunday in Colonial Athletic Association play at Brooks Field.
The Phoenix, which limited UNCW to two runs over the final 21 innings of the series, improved to 27-17 overall and 9-6 in the league. The Seahawks fell to 26-17 and 8-7.
Conroy (3-3) earned the win, allowing just three hits and walking two while striking out five.
Offensively, Elon held a 1-0 through the first seven innings on the strength of an opposite field home run by James Venuto in the fourth off losing pitcher Gage Herring. Venuto finished 2-for-2 on the day and reached base in all four plate appearances, including two walks. Cam Devanney chipped in two hits and Ty Adcock doubled in two runs in Elon’s three-run eighth.
UNCW was limited to three hits on the afternoon.
Herring (2-1) allowed just a run over 4 1/3 innings before making way for the bullpen.
Up Next: The Seahawks have no mid-week games and visit James Madison for three game beginning on May 4.
How it happened: Venuto homered in the fourth to get the Phoenix on the board and Elon struck for three in the eighth off Seahawk relievers Austin Warren and Clark Cota.
