The Southeastern North Carolina Browns Backers club had high hopes for the Cleveland Browns as they gathered at the Maria Grill in downtown Wilmington to watch the NFL draft on Thursday.
Cleveland owned the first and fourth picks and took Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield No. 1 before selecting Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward fourth.
"I wasn't really into taking Baker Mayfield at No. 1. I really wanted Sam Darnold (USC quarterback taken no. 3 by Jets),” said Browns Backers President David Grace. “Ward is a Buckeye and I know he's really good."
Most Browns fans in attendance felt the same way after watching the picks.
"The Browns enjoy collecting first round picks and will be in the basement for the rest of our lives,” Matt Warzel said. “Twenty years in the making I have been watching this show and it's not fun."
