WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Already this year, we have seen countless big names share their struggles with mental health.

Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps, actor Dwayne Johnson, and singer Mariah Carey have discussed periods in their life when they suffered from depression.
Often times, depression leads to drastic outcomes.

It’s hard sometimes to imagine what would lead someone to take their own life, but it happens daily.  But for so many others, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Beginning this week, during WECT News at 5 p.m., we’re going to start a conversation about suicide.  It’s something that typically doesn’t get covered in news, but it appears that time is up.

We are sharing stories with those affected by a loved one’s suicide and even some individuals who have attempted to end their own lives.

We hope to understand what is taking place, learn from them about how we can help, and share information that may inspire others to help themselves.

Consider This: Health statistics in recent years have shown New Hanover County’s suicide rate exceeding the state average.  Now is the time to make sure we are having this conversation.
