A four-run third inning and solid pitching performances from starter Alex Royalty and reliever Justin Walke helped lead UNCW to a 5-2 victory over Towson in a Colonial Athletic Association baseball game on Friday at Brooks Field.
Royalty (4-4) evened his season record after giving up two runs on five hits and striking out six in 6.2 innings. Walke worked the final 2.1 innings for the save, striking out four and allowing two hits.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Seahawks (23-14, 6-4 CAA) scored four times in the third, highlighted by Jackson Meadows' two-run single.
A fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth frame scored Zack Canada for the game's final run.
Meadows finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead UNCW's offense and Canada scored a pair of runs during his 1-for-2 effort with two walks. Greg Jones, Ryan Jeffers and Cole Weiss each scored single runs for the Seahawks.
Mark Grunberg went 3-for-4 to lead Towson (11-26, 4-6).
Game 2 of the three-game series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
