Suicide awareness: Start the conversation

Suicide awareness: Start the conversation

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - For decades our policy in regards to suicides has been unchanged: we don't report them. The decision is rooted in an unproven belief that doing so will encourage copycats.

As a result, countless people have vanished from our community unmentioned and have moved forward year after year as though suicides simply don't happen here.

Suicides are, unfortunately, all too common not only in our area but nationwide.

The conversation addressing suicide head-on is long overdue.

Let's talk.

Starting April 26 at 5 p.m. and throughout the month of May, we will be airing testimonials from those who have attempted suicide and those who have lost a loved one to suicide.

Let's be clear - these are not easy to watch and the conversation is uncomfortable. But suicide is not an individual issue or a family issue. It's a community issue.

Please join us for each testimonial and then online and on social media to start the talk. We have all been affected in some way by suicide. You don't have to be silent.
