Whiteville native Mackenzie Gore will be calling Fort Wayne, Ind., home to start the baseball season.
The San Diego Padres assigned Gore to play for the Fort Wayne Tincaps, the Padres Class A team.
Gore, a former Whiteville High School star who was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft, will be starting his first full season of professional baseball with Fort Wayne and has set some goals for himself.
“Stay healthy, getting through a full season, and have some success,” Gore told Fort Wayne TV station WPTA.
Gore is dealing with a blister on his pitching hand, but said he isn’t worried about it.
Major League Baseball has ranked Gore as the top left-handed pitching prospect in all of baseball.
"It's just one of those things that you take in. It really doesn't mean anything,” Gore said of the prospect ranking.
