Jacen Murphy made a name for himself playing football at New Hanover High School. Now, he’s giving back to the community that helped him.
Murphy, who played college football at East Carolina and North Carolina Central, is hosting a skills camp Saturday at Legion Stadium in Wilmington. The camp is for kids ages 6 through 17, and is free of charge.
Murphy says there is only one requirement for the campers.
“All they need to bring is a great attitude,” said Murphy. “I just want them to show up and want to learn and have fun.”
A guardian or parent must sign a waiver for kids attending the camp.
“You don't need a special skill set. You don't need to be the fastest, the tallest,” said Murphy. “Just show up and be ready to have fun."
Murphy said he has been wanting to host an event like this for years.
"I know how kids see me and other guys like me and my former New Hanover teammates Trevon Brown and Dequan Barnes,” said Murphy. “I want to be a mentor to kids."
Campers will learn alongside Murphy and his former high school and college teammates.
