UNCW and Charlotte met for their first women's tennis match since 2011 on Thursday and the visiting 49ers slipped past the Seahawks 4-3.
The match on the UNCW courts wasn't decided until the final pairing which pitted Charlotte's Pierina Imparato against UNCW's Sabrina Barisano. Imparato trailed 6-5 in a second-set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles before rallying for a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1 decision that lifted the 49ers to the win.
Xandra Fougner, Lea Dubois-Rebiere and the doubles teams of Barisano and Maddy Muller-Hughes and Sarah Horn and Celeste Matute notched victories for UNCW (1-9).
The Seahawks continue a four-match homestand on Saturday at noon against James Madison.
