CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) -
Carolina Beach town leaders met Tuesday morning to discuss a Lake Park Boulevard traffic study and possible solutions to the troubled roadway.
Last September, the town hired consultants Kimely-Horn to figure out how to improve traffic flow on the road N. Lake Park Boulevard.
"We cannot widen our way out of congestion," said a consultant with Kimely-Horn.
Problems that cause traffic congestion along the one mile road include insufficient street design, not enough vehicle lanes, and a lack of bicycle lanes.
North Lake Park Boulevard is unsafe and about 140 crashes have occurred since 2012, with a peak in the summer months of June and July.
32 injuries and one fatality occurred from these crashes.
Two main solutions were proposed. The first was adding an extra turn lane to N. Lake Park Boulevard, bringing the total number of lanes to five.
The second possibility was adding an extra road to create a couplet, which would increase traffic flow in each direction.
"Businesses and the public prefer... the five lane recommendation," said Joe Benson, Mayor of Carolina Beach, in the work session. "[There] was an acceptance that safety was more important. And congestion can be accepted at a reduced crash rate," said Benson about the public polling conducted in the study.
