Mason Berne's two home runs were not enough for UNCW's baseball team to beat Hofstra on Friday at Brooks Field.
The visiting Pride broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the eighth inning and tacked on another score in the ninth to beat the Seahawks 5-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association series opener for both teams.
Hofstra's Teddy Cillis led off the eighth with a double and later scored the go-ahead run on Rob Weissheier's RBI single.
Austin Gauthier completed the scoring when he crossed the plate on a fielder's choice in the ninth after singling with one out in the inning.
Berne led UNCW (14-7) with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two home runs, two runs scored and two RBIs. Zach Canada also went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
Three players had two hits apiece for the Pride (10-4), who outhit the Seahawks 10-5. Vinnie Costello went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs and Vito Friscia and Weissheier each finished with two hits.
Hofstra starter John Rooney (3-1) earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out seven in seven innings. Reliever Chris Weiss allowed two baserunners and struck out six in the final two innings to earn the save.
Austin Easter (3-1) took the loss for UNCW, allowing a run on two hits and a walk in 1.1 innings of relief. Seahawk starter Alex Royalty struck out 10 in six innings while giving up three runs on six hits.
The team will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
