Four more members of the 2017 New Hanover High School 3AA state championship football team will play in college.
Nas Brown, Grant Daley, Jadah Ellis, and Troy McCaskill all signed letters of commitment in the lobby of Brogden Hall on Wednesday.
Brown was the defensive player of the game in the Wildcats’ 27-17 state championship win over A.C. Reynolds in December. Brown will play linebacker for Averett University in Danville, Va.
“When I went up to visit, it just seemed like some place I can fit,” said Brown. “I loved the coaches and I feel like it’s a good place for me to land.”
Daley, who played linebacker alongside Brown at New Hanover, is headed to Appalachian State in Boone.
“It’s the place where I grew up going to games,” said Daley of App State. “Both my brothers went there, so pretty much for me, it wasn’t always wanting to play college football, but playing college football at App.”
Fellow linebacker McCaskill signed with Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. He said it was important to be able to share Wednesday’s signing day with his teammates.
“It was really great,” said McCaskill. “Just to think, we were all up in the air and not sure where we were going to go, but when it all hit and we all were going to sign, it was a big opportunity and big deal.”
Offensive lineman Ellis will stay in North Carolina to play at Guilford College in Greensboro. Ellis will leave New Hanover with plenty of great memories.
“Just competing with my brothers on the offensive line,” said Ellis. “Just each week trying to fight for the most pancake blocks, and see who gets the better grade on the O-line.”
