'Becoming Dr. Ruth' follows woman's journey to become America's most famous sex therapist

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - In her first one-woman show, Holli Saperstein takes on the role (and accent) of Dr. Ruth.

Becoming Dr. Ruth follows the incredible story of Karola Ruth Siegel, America's most famous sex therapist.

Saperstein said audiences may be surprised to know that Dr. Ruth fled the Nazis and joined the Haganah in Jerusalem as a scout and sniper prior to coming to America.

Once she arrived in the U.S., she taught herself English, put herself through school, earned her doctorate and was inspired to become a sex therapist during her work at Planned Parenthood.

Saperstein said it is a fun role for an actress to play this pioneer.

"She's such a character; she has such a distinctive voice that people recognize," she said. "I listened to 200 hours of her radio programs and television programs and immersed myself in listening to her voice and certain words she said are very distinct because of her experiences across the world before she came to the U.S."

Saperstein said the show is for more mature audiences.
"Dr. Ruth said she even blushed when she first heard some of the things she was saying," Saperstein said.

Performances of Becoming Dr. Ruth begin Thursday, March 22 at Ruth & Bucky Stein Studio Theatre.
